Former England batsman Kevin Pietersen has come out in support of Pakistan skipper Sarfraz Ahmed. The explosive Pietersen believes that the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) should have faith in their current captain and it will bear fruits in the future. Pietersen feels Sarfraz should lead the green brigade in the all-important 2019 World Cup.

The 30-year old stumper has been under fire and has been criticized by many former greats. Sarfraz led Pakistan to Champions Trophy victory in England last year, after flooring arch-rivals India in the finals at Lord’s. But things didn’t go as per plan for the charismatic skipper lately after Pakistan were handed bitter defeats against New Zealand.

Pietersen backs Sarfraz to come good

Pietersen said that Sarfraz has got a good cricketing brain and is an ideal candidate to lead the side.

“All the players like him (Sarfraz) and he has got a very good cricket brain,” Pietersen was quoted as saying by thenews.com.pk. “The World Cup is only 12 months away so I think that it will be a very clever decision for the Pakistani board to say to Sarfraz that you are leading our team to the World Cup.”

South Africa born Pietersen also added that it would be dicey for the next guy coming in as there won’t be any trust factor if the skipper gets the stick.

“If you replace your captain after a captain does as well as Sarfraz does, the new person that comes in thinks that he can be replaced too before the next world cup. From my experience, you back your captain…because if you back your captain your players feel safe too.”

He also praised Sarfraz for getting along the Quetta Gladiators unit like a family. Pietersen said that he wouldn’t be going to Pakistan if his team qualifies for the knock-out stage of the tournament.
