The right-handed veteran fast bowler Peter Siddle makes his way into the Indian team for the upcoming Boxing Day Test against New Zealand Cricket Team. He was named as the replacement for Josh Hazlewood, who bowled only eight balls in the first Test. After picking a wicket of Jeet Ravel in his first over, Hazlewood walked off with a hamstring tear.

The 35-year-old was overlooked for the series against Pakistan last month and did not feature in discussions about the current series against New Zealand until Josh Hazlewood was injured. He finally received the call-up, as the selection panel felt the services of the local cricketer would be beneficial for the team.

Peter Siddle is a proven performer – Trevor Hohns

Earlier, Siddle played in three of the Ashes Tests, taking nine wickets, but picked up an injury early at The Oval. Speaking of Peter Siddle, Trevor Hohns stated that Peter Siddle got plenty to offer for the team in his home ground. He also highlighted the fact that Peter Siddle is a proven performer in Test format of the game.

“Peter has been brought in as a 13th player for Melbourne,” Hohns said to the reporters. He is a proven Test match performer with an exceptional knowledge of the MCG which will be a valuable part of our preparation.”

James Pattinson is ahead in the race – Justin Langer

Despite receiving the call, it will be tough for Peter Siddle to break into the playing XI. If Australia only makes one change for Boxing Day – a replacement for Hazlewood, Siddle will remain behind James Pattinson and Michael Neser in the pecking order. The head coach Justin Langer already confirmed that Siddle would end up warming the bench for the Boxing Day Test.

“You’d imagine a couple of guys would have to get injured [for Siddle to play],” Langer said to the reporters. “A lot has been made about someone coming in but you have to cover your bases, especially with Big Bash going on you have to make sure you have enough cover. I’d say James Pattinson or Michael Neser, or both of them will definitely play the Test.”

Both have been part of the Test squad throughout the season. James Pattinson, who was ruled out of contention for the opening Test of the season against Pakistan in Brisbane due to his code of conduct suspension, is the favourite to come into the side.
