The Police seems to have made a big progress in the spot-fixing case that has rocked Karnataka Premier League (KPL) in recent days. The Central Crime Branch (CCB), on Monday, arrested Belagavi Panthers owner Ali Asfak Thara in Bengaluru for allegedly betting during the tournament. Along with KPL, the Tamil Nadu Premier League is also facing fixing allegations.

The Police discovered that Ali Asfak Thara was in contact with a Dubai-based bookie. The Panthers owner used to place his bets through the bookie. Ali Asfak Thara had joined the Panthers before the start of the 2017 season and had an immediate impact. In his maiden season with the team, the Panthers won the league for the very first time.

The Panthers are in the league since its inception in 2009. In this year’s edition, they finished at the second spot in the points table. They eventually bowed out of the tournament after losing the second qualifier to Hubli Tigers. India batting star Manish Pandey had played for the Panther this year.

“We arrested Belagavi Panthers team owner Ali Asfak Thara for placing bets on matches. The accused placed bets with the help of a Dubai-based bookie. Regarding match-fixing, it is still under inquiry. Investigation revealed that Thara was in touch with players of other teams during KPL matches. The players are being questioned,” Sandeep Patil, joint commissioner of police, CCB said.

Just like KPL, the Tamil Nadu Premier League is also under scanner due to the spot-fixing allegations. The BCCI as well as the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association are taking all possible measures to sort things out.
