Prithvi Shaw’s hopes of making a swift return to the Test side has taken a big blow after the youngster suffered an injury while playing for Mumbai in their Ranji Trophy clash against Karnataka on Friday. Prithvi Shaw has not played for India since his debut series against West Indies in 2018.

He was a part of the team that toured Australia but an injury ruled him out of the series. Things then went from bad to worse for the highly-rated youngster as he was suspended for a doping violation. And while he was out of action, Rohit Sharma and Mayank Agarwal impressed as openers and are now set to get a longer rope.

Prithvi Shaw returned to action in November and impressed straightaway. He was recently named in India A’s squad for the tour of New Zealand. However, barely a week before leaving for New Zealand, the Mumbai starlet Shaw hurt his left shoulder while fielding.

The incident happened in the third session at the Bandra Kurla Complex ground when Prithvi Shaw dived to save an overthrow. He was immediately taken off the field. The India A squad will leave for New Zealand on January 10. He is a part of the limited-overs squad as well as the squad for the four-day matches.

“He (Shaw) looks better. Looking at him on the ground, it was not looking good but now I think he is looking good. Later on I will get to know from the physio on what exactly the situation is (with regard to him) ,” said Mumbai skipper Suryakumar Yadav after the day’s play.

According to media report, Shaw also underwent an MRI scan as a precautionary measure. The youngster, meanwhile, has been in good form since returning to action.

In his comeback game which was against Assam, the highly-rated batsman slammed a quickfire knock of 63. In the following games, he scored 30, 64, 30 and 53 as Mumbai missed out on a semifinal berth.

He then impressed on his comeback to red-ball cricket too by slamming 66 off just 62 against Baroda in the first innings. In the second innings, he scored a stunning double century. If Shaw recovers in time and does well for India A, he could be named as the backup opener for the Test series in New Zealand.
