Rajasthan Royals batsman Ashton Turner will ply his trade for Worcestershire for the whole of their T20 Blast campaign next year. The English club was able to sign the Australian finisher only after ECB’s decision to change its visa criteria. The board made the change in order to attract the best overseas players for the Hundred next year.

Ashton Turner, who played a sensational match-winning knock in Mohali ODI this year, has played only 11 white-ball internationals in the past 24 months. As per the criteria, the players needed to have played at least 15 such games – or one Test – in that time period to obtain the visa. However, to make sure that The Hundred do not miss out on star power due to the rule, the ECB decided to change the criteria.

As per the new rule, the players who have played at least 20 domestic T20 fixtures in recognised leagues in the past two years can get a visa now. As a result, Ashton Turner has been roped in by Worcestershire. The team finished this year’s competition as the runners-up after winning it last year.

Ashton Turner, meanwhile, narrowly missed out on Australia’s World Cup squad. He was in the reckoning after slamming 84 not out from 43 balls against India in a successful run chase of 359 in only his second ODI. He then played in the IPL but failed miserably. The hard-hitting batsman, who scored 378 runs in last year’s Big Bash League, made first-ball ducks in each of his first three innings in the IPL. He will be looking to make amends in the next season.

The right-handed batsman, meanwhile, continues to be a regular face in Australia’s T20I side. He was a member of the playing eleven in all of Australia’s six T20Is against Sri Lanka and Pakistan over the past two weeks.
