Former India off-spinner, Ramesh Powar has expressed his desire to coach the Mumbai Ranji team. The decision comes after the position was left vacant following the resignation of former Indian wicket-keeper, Sameer Dighe. He decided to step down just after a season.

Powar is Willing to coach Mumbai

Powar decided to step down from the role of a spin consultant at the Mumbai Cricket Associations’ BKC facility. It was after his request to hold a camp for young spinners got denied. In protest, Powar resigned from his job. However, he has now expressed his willingness to coach the Mumbai team.

“I want to apply for the job. I was there for six-seven months, and I know exactly what the issues in the system are. I am extremely emotionally attached to Mumbai cricket and would like to give something back to it. I know where our team lacks at the moment, and what can be done to rectify it,” Powar was quoted as saying to the Times of India from Brisbane.

He has gone for a 15-day sojourn Down Under to train the U-23 Australian spinners.

A former Indian cricketer, Powar never had the attributes of becoming a national cricketer. From childhood, he was body shamed due to his overweight.

However, he defied all the odds and went on to represent India in 31 ODI’s and a couple of Tests. He bagged 34 wickets in the ODI’s while six in Tests. He was also a handy batsman lower down the order and chipped in with crucial knocks quite a few times.

Pawar made his national debut in 2004

Powar made his ODI debut for India way back in 2004 against Pakistan and went on to make his debut in Tests three years later. Powar was a consistent performer in the domestic circuit for several years which eventually led to his national selection. In 148 first-class matches, the off-spinner bagged 470 wickets at an average of 31.
