‘A captain is as good as his team’ – This sentence is one of the most popular ones in the game. More often than not one has heard captains crediting their teams after leading them to victories. But if the ongoing World Cup is considered, the sentence can be flipped. In the ongoing World Cup, the captains of all the better performing teams are performing from the very front.

Barring India, all the ten participating teams have now played at least five of their ten league games. At the moment, New Zealand are at the top of the points table with 4 wins from 5 games. England and Australia have also won 4 of their five games but have lost one unlike New Zealand. India are fourth in the points table while Bangladesh are fifth.

The bottom half of the points table feature Sri Lanka, West Indies, South Africa, Pakistan and Afghanistan. All the last five teams in the points table are standing on the verge of elimination from the points table. Well, with the World Cup now all set to enter its business phase, we are rating the top five captains of the ongoing tournament:

5. Mashrafe Mortaza:

Unlike few other captains in this tournament, Mashrafe Mortaza has not quite delivered with the ball. In four games so far, he has picked up just a solitary wicket. However, it should not undermine his contribution as captain. The veteran fast-bowler has marshalled his troop really well on the field. A team that is a fine blend of youth and experience has got a brilliant leader in Mortaza.

The vastly experienced campaigner has used his limited resources brilliantly and has led Bangladesh to famous wins over South Africa and West Indies. He had also nearly led Bangladesh to win over New Zealand in a low-scoring thriller.

4. Eoin Morgan:

The way England batsmen have performed so far, they have more or less settled the game on their own. Morgan, however, has still made his mark with his captaincy by cleverly shuffling his bowlers and field placements. He has also led the team from the front, already scoring one fifty and a career-best 148 in the tournament so far.

3. Virat Kohli:

Virat Kohli has been once again impeccable as a batsman and as a captain. He has led India to crushing wins over South Africa, Australia and Pakistan to prove India’s title-winning credentials. He has managed India’s formidable bowling attack brilliantly and has made his team the one to beat in the World Cup. Kohli has also excelled as batsman, scoring 177 runs at an average of 59 so far.

2. Aaron Finch:

Australia have won four of their five games thus far but have rarely looked at their best.  The likes of West Indies, Sri Lanka have stretched them while India have defeated them. This is where Finch’s captaincy has helped them to a great extent.Leading Australia for the first time in the World Cup, Finch has looked class apart.  The way he has managed Mitchell Starc, it is really commendable. Finch has used his pacers brilliantly and it has paid off well. His performance with the bat is equally impressive. He has so far scored 343 runs at an average of 68.60.

1. Kane Williamson:

New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson has been the best of the lot so far. New Zealand are the only team who have not conceded 300-run in a game this World Cup and the credit should go to Williamson. The way he has marshalled his bowlers – pacers and spinners, he has not really given the opposition a chance to bat freely.

His batting is as usual impressive. Williamson’s match-winning century against South Africa will go down in the history as one of the best knocks of World Cup.
