“My heartiest congratulations to Sourav for taking over as the BCCI president. His appointment is an indication that Indian cricket is moving in the right direction. He’s always been a natural leader. When someone like him – who already dipped his feet into cricket administration four or five years ago – takes over as president of the BCCI, it’s a win-win for Indian cricket. These are difficult times for the Board and there’s a lot of work to do to bring BCCI back on the path of glory. I wish him all the best in his stint,” Shastri told TOI.

It is to be noted that the duo does not share a good rapport. In 2016, when Shastri was pipped by Anil Kumble for the head coach job, he blamed Ganguly and said that the CAC member wasn’t present during the interview.

After multiple attacks from Shastri, Ganguly also responded and had sad that he (Shastri) was living in a fool’s world. At last, the BCCI had to ask both the former cricketers to end the matter.

In 2017, Shastri did make a comeback as the head coach but as per reports, the reason behind his comeback was the backing from the other two members of the CAC.

Since Ganguly has taken over the board’s boss, there have been speculations that Shastri might have to again undergo the same process to continue the job as the CAC which picked the coach was sent conflict of interest notices but Ganguly confirmed that Shastri will continue to be the head coach, which means he will perform his role till November 2021.

There are clear signs that both the former India captains have now moved on from what happened in 2016 and have the sole purpose to take the Indian cricket forward.

While Ganguly has met Indian captain Virat Kohli, white-ball vice-captain Rohit Sharma and the members of the selection panel, he is yet to meet the head coach. A likely meeting between them and other members of the team might take place during the second Test between India and Bangladesh at Eden Gardens next month.
