Former India cricketer Chetan Chauhan has joined the bandwagon asking for the removal of Ravi Shastri as the head coach of India in the wake of team’s 4-1 thrashing in the Test series in England.

Hopes were high from the current India side when this year began. After thoroughly dominating the last couple of years at home, this was the year which could have truly justified India’s number one ranking. With series against South Africa, England and Australia lined up, good showing in tough overseas conditions would have enhanced India’s reputation.

However, the current team also failed to end India’s recent woes outside the country. They began the year with a 2-1 defeat in South Africa. And the condition only worsened in England with a heavy 4-1 defeat.

On most of the occasions, the Indian players’ inability to pounce upon opportunities cost them. Virat Kohli & Co. gave England a run for their money but just could not capitalise when they were on top. And in the wake of the series defeat not only the players, Shastri is also facing the heat.

What has further made things bad for Shastri is his controversial comment after the defeat in fourth Test when he said the current side is the best travelling Indian team in the last 15-20 years.

The likes of Sourav Ganguly and Harbhajan Singh have already called for the removal of Shastri. And now Chetan Chauhan has joined the chorus too. Chauhan said that the BCCI should sack Shastri before India advance for their final important overseas tour this year in Australia, in November.

“Ravi Shastri should be removed as head coach before the Australia tour. Ravi Shastri is very good cricket commentator and he should be allowed to do so,” Chauhan said.

Chauhan was speaking to mediapersons in Dhanbad and said,

“Team India should have performed better. Both the teams were evenly matched. But the Indian team failed to check tail enders of England.”

Commenting on Shastri’s claims that the current side is the best travelling team, Chauhan said:

“I do not agree. In 1980s, the Indian team was the best travelling team in the world.”

Shastri’s next assignment, meanwhile, is the ongoing Asia Cup. India open their campaign against Qualifiers Hong Kong on September 18 before taking on Pakistan next day.
