Delhi Capitals are on a mission to build a strong team for the next edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). In a bid to do so, they secured the services of veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin in a trading deal with Kings XI Punjab. Meanwhile, speculations have riffed up whether Ashwin will take over the leadership from Shreyas Iyer in the next season.

The young batsman from Mumbai took over the baton of the side when Gautam Gambhir stepped down in the middle of IPL 2018. The former cricketer took the onus of the team’s poor result and parted ways. The management was quick to spot Shreyas Iyer for the captaincy role and the young batsman responded well.

He worked as the full-time skipper earlier this year and Delhi Capitals did fairly well under his leadership. Although they didn’t win the trophy but qualified for the playoffs for the first time in over five years. But with Ravichandran Ashwin joining the side from Kings XI Punjab, debates emerged that he might take the baton from Shreyas Iyer.

Ashwin led the Punjab side in the last two season of IPL but failed to provide desirable results. As the speculations started to reach its peak, a report in Sportstar has confirmed that Shreyas Iyer will continue to lead the team. Ravichandran Ashwin will play under the young cricketer.

Meanwhile, Delhi Capitals are also trying to bring in Ajinkya Rahane from Rajasthan Royals to add experience to their squad. Rahane has been in Rajasthan for a long time and might look for new challenges but it still requires a green signal from the franchise.

The auction for the 2020 edition of the Indian Premier League will take place in Kolkata on December 19.
