Ravichandran Ashwin, ace Indian off-spinner, feels that him running out England’s Jos Buttler during the last edition of the Indian Premier League, was blown out of proportion.

Ashwin had courted a huge controversy last season when he ran out  Rajasthan Royals swashbuckling batsman Jos Buttler at the non-striker end.

Following the controversy, the spirit of cricket debate once again reared its head and a lot of Buttler’s England teammates lambasted Ashwin for his act.

James Anderson had gone one step ahead and posted a video of him where he could be seen pushing a picture of Ashwin into a paper shredder, adding that ‘it was not a done thing to do’.

Ashwin, however, found support from his fellow off-spinner Murali Karthik, who had then taken to Twitter to say that he was proud of what Ash had done.

Karthik himself had a tryst with controversy when he ran out the non-striker during his stint with Surrey and also in Ranji Trophy.

Ashwin, on the other hand, had run-out Sri Lankan batsman Lahiru Thirimanne during a 2012 Commonwealth Bank tri-series ODI. But the then captain Virender Sehwag decided to take back the appeal.

“What I did is what the rules are supposed to be.”- Ravichandran Ashwin on ‘mankading’ Jos Butter

Ashwin recently appeared on Harsha Bhogle’s live chat session on CricBuzz where he was given a choice of selecting one of six houses containing cricketers where he would hypothetically spend his lockdown period in.

The Indian off-spinner proceeded to chose house number 3, which consisted of England’s Jos Buttler, Australian Test captain Tim Paine and his India and Delhi Capitals teammate Rishabh Pant.

“My conversation with Jos would not be about justifying why I was right or why he was right and actually feeling aggrieved about it. But it would be centered more around how you’ve got to differentiate [between] cricket and life in general.” Ravichandran Ashwin told CricBuzz.

“Sometimes [I feel] what I did to him during that game is blown out of proportion in terms of character assassination,” added Ashwin. “Which is quite silly if truth has to be told. I haven’t earned a level one demerit point in my whole career. What I did is what the rules are supposed to be.” he added.
