Ravichandran Ashwin was a part of the Test team that played against Sri Lanka in Delhi in December 2017. The game was all over the news for all the wrong reasons. In order to counter the pollution of the national capital, Sri Lankan players had to wear masks while fielding. The visiting players had also complained about having difficulty in breathing.

Unsurprisingly, the BCCI had faced criticism from all around for hosting the game in Delhi. Well, Delhi is set to host another game this week with India taking on Bangladesh in the first T20I. Ravichandran Ashwin will not be a part of the game but the spinner is well aware of the conditions that the players will face in Delhi.

Delhi’s weather or rather the polluted air has been the talk of the town from the last one week or so. And Ravichandran Ashwin also gave his take on the same. The spinner took to Twitter to state that the quality of air in Delhi is ‘really scary’, tweeting:

“The quality of air in Delhi is really scary, the oxygen we breathe is the basic requisite for mankind on this planet. This indeed is emergency. #AirQualityIndex #pollution”

The overall air quality index (AQI) crossed the 400 mark on Wednesday this week, raising concerns among residents of the city. An AQI between 0-50 is considered “good”, 51-100 “satisfactory”, 101-200 “moderate”, 201-300 “poor”, 301-400 “very poor”, and 401-500 “severe”. Above 500 is “severe-plus emergency” category.

Thus, there are apprehensions over the players being exposed to the polluted air while playing the game. The game, nonetheless, is set to go ahead as scheduled. On Friday, several pictures and videos showed Bangladesh players and staff members training while wearing masks. On the other hand, India opener Rohit Sharma has said that he has faced no problem in the city.
