While the omission of Ravinchandran Ashwin from the squad for the first three games of the upcoming five-match One-Day International series against Australia was very much on the cards due to his commitment in county cricket, Ravindra Jadeja not getting a place in the team looked a baffling decision.

The left-arm spinner, who did not have the best of outings in the Champions Trophy, was rested for the recently-concluded limited-overs series in Sri Lanka along with pace bowling duo Umesh Yadav, Mohammed Shami and Ashwin. However, while Yadav and Shami have returned to the side, Jadeja, according to chief selector MSK Prasad has been rested again.

“The team for the three ODIs against Australia has been selected in line with the rotation policy of the Board and accordingly R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja have been rested. The team’s performance during the Sri Lanka tour was outstanding, and players like Axar Patel and Yuzvendra Chahal, who performed very well are being given an extended run, and this will, in turn, supplement our approach, to build a strong reserve strength, as we prepare for forthcoming tours,” Prasad said after the squad announcement on Sunday (September 10).

Well, everything looked fine until Jadeja decided to post a cryptic message on Twitter which hinted that the snub from the team is a setback for the Saurashtra star.

“Make your comebacks stronger than your setbacks,” Jadeja tweeted.

Here’s the screenshot of that deleted tweet by Ravindra Jadeja:

Interestingly, he deleted the tweet soon. Jadeja has not managed to replicate his Test form in the limited-overs format in recent times. He managed only four wickets in the Champions Trophy and failed to do well against Windies. He remained wicketless in the first three games in the Caribbeans before being dropped from the team.
