Royal Challengers Bangalore are now standing on the verge of becoming the first team to be eliminated from this year’s Indian Premier League.  The three-time finalists have now lost six games in a row and have equalled the record of the worst start to the season by a team. In 2013, Delhi Capitals had lost their opening six games. One of the reasons behind the the poor performances this year is the failure of the team to come up with collective effort.

The batsmen, bowlers and fielders have just not clicked together for the Royal Challengers this season and consequently, the team is rooted at the bottom of the points table. On Sunday, they lost their sixth game, ending on the wrong side of the result against Delhi Capitals.

In reply, Delhi were off to a shaky start but rode on their skipper Shreyas Iyer’s 67-run knock to chase down the total with more than an over remaining.

So where did it all go wrong for the Royal Challengers? Do they really need a more balanced playing eleven or the reason behind their struggles is something else?

A close analysis of the games has revealed that the failure to get the basics right this season is the prime reason.  The fielders and bowlers have played a big role in the Royal Challengers Bangalore’s dismal performances this season. While the fielders have dropped catches at crucial junctures, the bowlers have delivered no-balls at precarious moments. In just 6 games so far, Royal Challengers Bangalore have dropped a total of 14 catches, the most by any team. On Sunday, Parthiv Patel had dropped had Iyer in the very first over of the innings and the Delhi skipper had gone on to score a match-winning fifty.
