In a tragic incident, Jasprit Bumrah’s grandfather passed away on Sunday (December 10) when the speedster was leading India’s pace attack in the first One-Day International against Sri Lanka in Dharamsala.

What is even more heartbreaking is that the 84-year old Santok Singh Bumrah committed suicide by jumping in the Sabarmati river in Ahmedabad?

According to a report in Deccan Chronicle, Police Inspector Jayantilala Brahmbhatt, attached with the Vastrapur Police Station confirmed the tragic incident, stating the old man was missing since Friday before the police discovered the suicide case.

“Bumrah’s 84-year-old grandfather was missing since Friday, and the complaint was made by his daughter (Rajinder Kaur), and we were investigating the complaint and found this suicide case,”  Brahmbhatt was quoted as saying by Deccan Chronicle.

“Before leaving his daughter’s house, the old-aged man told his daughter that he was not allowed to meet his grandson (Jasprit) and would end his life. The grandfather spent one night in Gurudwara and then jumped in the river-front (East) side of Sabarmati river,” the inspector added.

The report further claimed Santok Singh Bumrah took the dire step after being denied permission to meet Jasprit and this disappointed the grandfather a great deal.

“It was a family dispute between the two families,” said the police inspector.

“The body was sent for the post-mortem before being handed over to his daughter. The last rites will be performed by his daughter,” concluded the inspector.

Meanwhile, early this year, reports came out describing the poor conditions in which Santok Singh Bumrah was living in. Reports suggested the Indian bowler’s grandfather lived in Uddham Singh Nagar of Uttarakhand and was driving an auto to make ends meet.

Santok had to face the adversities after the death of his son and Bumrah’s father, Jasveer Singh Bumrah.

Santok Singh was a rickshaw driver in Uttarakhand.

After his son’s death, a devastated Santok, who used to own three factories, lost his business and to pay some loans he had to sell his factories.

He decided to leave for Uttarakhand in 2006 and decided to start afresh by buying four tempos. However, he ran out of luck again, as he suffered losses and he was compelled to sell three of the four tempos.
