On Sunday, Australia allrounder Marcus Stoinis was slapped with a hefty fine after directing a homophobic slur at Kane Richardson during the Big Bash League clash between Melbourne Stars and Melbourne Renegades at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

It was the second such incident taking place in Australian cricket. In November, Australia pacer James Pattinson was banned for player abuse, also reportedly a homophobic slur. Pattinson was slapped with a one-match suspension which ruled him out of the first Test against Pakistan.

But fortunately for Marcus Stoinis, the authorities did not hand him a suspension. Instead, he was fined Aus$7,500 (US$5,200) after being found guilty of breaching Cricket Australia’s code of conduct.

“The behaviour in this matter falls short of the standards we expect and we have acted accordingly,” Sean Carroll, Cricket Australia’s head of integrity and security said of the Stoinis fine.

“There is no place for it in the game,” added Carroll.

The word that led to the fine:

While Sean Carroll referred to the matter as “personal abuse of a player”, Cricket Australia website characterised it as a homophobic slur but none of the two mentioned the details of the incident.

According to Australian news outlet Sydney Morning Herald, Marcus Stoinis called Kane Richardson a “faggot” and was thus fined. Later, he had apologised for the comment, admitting that he did cross the line.

“I got caught in the moment and took it too far,” Stoinis said of the incident. “I realised immediately I was in the wrong and I apologise to Kane and to the umpires.

“I did the wrong thing and accept responsibility for my actions. The standards are there for a reason and I accept the penalty,” he added.

This was not the first time, Marcus Stoinis and Kane Richardson made it to the news for reasons other than the game. The two have had a long-running battle on the pitch – with Richardson having imitated Stoinis’ ‘hulk’ celebration during a match 12 months ago.
