Former Australian skipper Ricky Ponting is excited about the lanky young fast bowler Billy Stanlake. The latter bagged 24 scalps recently in the Big Bash League (BBL) season. Interestingly, it included his Twenty20 International outings of late.
Owing to the new-look pace attack, Stanlake has shown fizz in the Tri-series. He has bagged eight wickets in five outings.
“He’s got a little nasty streak in him as well – he likes bowling bouncers,” Ponting was quoted, as saying by Cricket Australia.
Stanlake has already impressed the Cricket Australia (CA), selectors. However, his sheer pace and bounce, as Ponting heaped praises on him.
“He’s almost seven feet tall, bowls close to 150 kilometres an hour, he can swing the new ball,” Ponting maintained.
The 23-year-old young paceman Stanlake, who hails from Hervey Bay, has received a massive compliment from veteran batsman Ponting.
The 43-year-old Ponting stated Stanlake could finish off his career among greats of the game.
“That’s all there ahead of him, we just hope he stays in one piece and becomes the kind of cricketer we all think he can be,” Ponting added.
The towering right-arm bowler, Stanlake, made his debut in January 2017 against Pakistan. He recently was the part of KFC’s Big Bash League (BBL) franchise Adelaide Strikers which lifted the title of the seventh edition.
“When we see him get a bit more of a tank and grow into his body a bit more and put on a little bit of weight, I think he’s someone that could be one of the all-time great fast bowlers,” Ponting remarked.
While seeing something spectacular in Stanlake, Ponting has observed the former in the recently concluded Trans-Tasman Tri-nation series.
“I just love the look of what he’s got,” Ponting said.
Stanlake played an imperative role which further saw Australia lifting the title after routing New Zealand.
Moreover, For the Adelaide-based outfit, Stanlake played a significant role during the recently culminated T20 league.
“I know coming out of the Big Bash and even being around this group, we’ve been trying to pump his loads up to get him to bowl seven or eight overs a day,” Ponting stated.
Ponting is concurrently serving Australia as an assistant coach for T20Is. He believes the promising prospect has shown a lot of promise in his early stage of international cricket.
