When India toured West Indies last year after the World Cup, it kickstarted their preparation for this year’s T20 World Cup. The tournament is now just nine months away and Virat Kohli-led India will be desperate to lay their hands on the trophy. India have not won an ICC tournament since winning the Champions Trophy in 2013.

But while the preparations for the competition is in full flow, it looks like the team-management still does not know which players can make it to the T20 World Cup squad. India skipper Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have given contradicting statements on the number of slots that are up for grabs for the marquee event in Australia.

Before departing for West Indies last summer, Virat Kohli had said that only one spot in up for grabs in the team although he did not specify the spot.

“The fight obviously is for one spot and I think more or less three guys have made a place for themselves. It’s going to be a healthy competition and it will be interesting to see how it pans out,” Virat Kohli had said at the pre-match press conference ahead of the West Indies tour.

However, his deputy Rohit Sharma has given a different opinion, saying that there ‘there are a lot of spots’ the team need to fill.

“It is a long way from the World Cup. We are preparing for that, (and) a lot of guys are getting ready for that. (It) means there are a lot of spots we need to fill. It is a work in progress,” Rohit Sharma was quoted as saying by Hindustan Times.

“Anyway the 15-20 guys we have are all really good and have performed really well and are very confident. It is just about doing what we need to do in Australia and then try and win that World Cup,” he added.
