Rohit Sharma has been a part of international cricket since 2007. While he had to wait for as long as 2013 for a Test debut, he announced his arrival in the longer format with back-to-back centuries in his maiden Test appearance. However, he failed to rise to the occasion ever since and possesses an average of below 40 in 27 Tests to date. Meanwhile, Gautam Gambhir speaks on the immediate future of Rohit Sharma.

Rohit Sharma is undoubtedly one of the best batsmen in the limited-overs format. But, when it comes to Test Cricket, he is yet to find his rhythm in the longest version of the game. After making his Test debut in 2013 in Kolkata, he has played only 27 matches in which he has scored 1,585 runs comprising of 3 centuries and 10 fifties.

While the limited-overs specialist is a part of the two-match Test series between India and West Indies, many believe that another failure could well be the end of the road for the 32-year-old in whites. However, it seems like he will be part of the team to warm the bench for a long time now, as the players in the playing XI are using the opportunity to perfection.

Rohit Sharma should perform when it gets a chance – Gautam Gambhir

Earlier, Gautam Gambhir suggested Rohit Sharma have a session with Rahul Dravid or Sachin Tendulkar in order to correct the little flaw and the patience to bat in the Test cricket. However, now, he believes that Ajinkya Rahane and Hanuma Vihari has strengthened their case to stay in the playing XI.

“He (Rohit) has got to wait for his opportunity. There is Rahane, who has done well now and Vihari too. So he has to wait and when gets that opportunity, he needs to perform,” Gambhir told PTI.

”I am not at all surprised (with Rahane’s performance) but it was a much-needed performance, both from individual and team’s point of view. And when it comes in a winning cause, it doesn’t get better than that,” said Gambhir, who played 58 Tests and 147 ODIs for India.

Well, as Gautam Gambhir said, it will take a considerable time for Rohit Sharma to get back into the playing XI. However, there is a bit of chance if the team management tries to test him in the opening slot, as none of the players took the position.
