Previously, it was Sunil Gavaskar and Ramnath Parker opened in the same way for India, which was way back in 1972. During the game, Parkar was making his debut for India in Test cricket while Sunil Gavaskar was playing his first Test in India after his stellar start in overseas games.

Rohit and Mayank are also playing their first match in India as designated Test openers. While Maynak has cemented his place in the side, Rohit is playing his first Test as an opener. The vice captain in limited overs cricket has replaced KL Rahul at the top, who was axed from the Test side for his inconsistent run.

Thankfully, it has been a lovely opening partnership for India at the time of lunch session, as Rohit Sharma and Mayank Agarwal played a gem of knock without losing their wicket. The duo played sensibly and took their chances to make things fall in place.

Though Vernon Philander and Kagiso Rabada tried to trouble Indian openers, they were rock solid with the bat. Certainly, it helped Indians to take the initial advantage and the first session honours as well.
