Mumbai Indians suffered a blow ahead of their match against Kings XI Punjab as Rohit Sharma was ruled out of the contest due to an injury.

Rohit suffered the issue on the eve of the game, during team’s practice session.

Mumbai Indians confirmed the injury before the start of the match and revealed that he is suffering from right leg muscle spasm.

“Rohit Sharma suffered a right leg muscle spasm yesterday during training. Rohit has recovered significantly in the past 24 hours. As a precautionary measure, Mumbai Indians management has decided to rest Rohit for one match, i.e. vs KXI,” a statement from Mumbai Indians read as.

It was after a period of 11 years that Rohit missed an IPL match.

In his absence, Siddhesh Lad was handed his debut IPL cap.

He is a right-handed batsman who plays for Mumbai in domestic cricket.

Lad made his debut for India A in the previous domestic season.

He has been part of Mumbai Indians camp right from 2015 and it is after a period of five seasons that he is making his IPL debut.

Kieron Pollard is leading the team in Rohit’s absence.

There were no other changes in Mumbai Indians’ playing XI.

It meant that there was no place for Lasith Malinga in the playing XI as well.

He had flown to Mumbai from Sri Lanka to be part of the team but Alzarri Joseph retained his place.

The Caribbean pacer record best-ever figures in the history of IPL in the previous match against Sunrisers Hyderabad.

He bowled a spell of 6/12, that also included wicket off the first ball that he bowled in his IPL career.

Kings XI Punjab has had few changes in the playing XI. Mayank Agarwal was ruled out of the game due to a finger injury.

Karun Nair replaced him in the playing XI to play his first game of the season.

In another change, Hardus Viljoen also came in for Mujeeb ur Rahman.

The prime reason behind it could be the dew factor as spinners have not been able to grip the ball well in Mumbai.
