At a time when every player in the world is craving for a lucrative multi-million deal from an Indian Premier League franchise, Rohit Sharma has shown the way with a beautiful gesture. To stay with his beloved Mumbai Indians, the skipper has taken a pay cut.

Rohit has been an integral part of the team since being signed by the franchise in 2011.  After becoming the batting mainstay of the team, Rohit was made the captain in 2013 when Ricky Ponting was benched due to poor form, and the right-handed batsman has not looked back since then. Mumbai Indians won their maiden IPL title under Rohit’s captaincy in 2013. It was a terrific season for him as a captain as his team went on to win the Champions League T20 as well.

In 2015, he led Mumbai Indians to win the IPL title yet again by beating Chennai Super Kings. He had also won the Man of The Match award in the finals. In 2017, the Mumbai Indians finished at the top of the table and also went on to win the final under his captaincy. In doing so, Rohit became the only skipper to have led his team to win the IPL three times.

Rohit’s performance with the bat has been equally impressive.  With 4,207 runs in 154 innings, the 30-year old has the most runs for Mumbai in the history of the IPL. And to ensure the highly successful association goes on in the coming years, he has taken a pay cut.

“Rohit is a leader not just on field but off it too. We have seen him dropping to No 3 or lower down the batting order at times only to bring balance to the side. And now, his selfless gesture only goes on to proves that he keeps the team’s priority over self,” a source was quoted as saying by The Times of India.

Rohit, on Thursday (January 4), was retained by the three-time  Champions along with Jasprit Bumrah and Jasprit Bumrah.
