Former India cricketer Vikram Rathour has succeeded Sanjay Bangar as Team India’s new batting coach. In his first interview after taking on the job, Rathour has downplayed the promotion of Rohit Sharma as Test opener saying that he is too good to play all the formats.

The All Indian National Selection Committee has pipped Rohit to be the Test opener after KL Rahu;’s repeated failure. There has been a mixed reaction ever since the selectors announced the Test squad. While Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman backed the move, a few felt a consistent performer like Abhimanyu Easwaran or Priyank Panchal deserved the opportunity.

But Vikram Rathour has squashed all the reports stating that Rohit Sharma is tailor-made for all the formats of the game. Rohit has earlier batted in the middle-order in Test cricket and has relatively failed to cement his position in the red-ball cricket.

Rathour said that Rohit has been successful in limited-overs cricket and has the ability to carry on the same form in Tests as well.

“He is too good a player to not be playing in any game. That is what is everyone is thinking. He has done so well in white-ball cricket as an opener so there is no reason why he can’t succeed as a Test opener provided he gets enough opportunities,” Rathour said.

Furthermore, Vikram Rathour added that Rohit Sharma will be an asset for the team in the upcoming Tests series against South Africa. Team India’s new batting coach didn’t dismiss Rohit’s chances of opening the batting in overseas Test tours as well.

“At the moment, I am not too sure what the playing eleven for the first Test will be but if Rohit does well and is opening, why not,” Rathour concluded.
