Veteran New Zealand middle-order batsman, Ross Taylor, has revealed that featuring in the ICC 50-over World Cup in 2023 remains his long-term goal.

Earlier this year, Taylor had said that he will have more clarity on his international future following the culmination of the home summer after the BlackCaps mid-year international rubbers were canceled due to Covid-19.

That said, the champion batsman still feels that with the 50-over World Cup dragged till October-November 2023, it might just get out of his reach. Taylor has featured in as many as 4 World Cups for the BlackCaps will be 39 by the time the net 50-over quadrennial event roles around.

“You’ve got to have short-term goals and long-term goals and the one-day World Cup is definitely on the radar,” Taylor said. “It doesn’t mean I will make it, but it’s definitely one of my goals.” Ross Taylor was quoted as saying by Reuters.

“(It) was going to be a stretch … at the best of times, when it was February and March,” he said. And now the World Cup has been dragged out to October and November ‘23, it’s another six or seven months to hang around.” Ross Taylor admitted.

Ross Taylor is at that stage in his career where he brings up a milestone for himself almost every time he turns up for New Zealand.

Earlier this year, the veteran batsman had become the first-ever cricketer to complete a rare feat of representing his country in 100-plus matches in all three formats. New Zealand’s highest Test and ODI run-getter, Taylor has thus far featured in 101 Tests, 232 ODIs, and 100 T20Is, and he is well in contention to become the BlackCaps most-capped player in the upcoming summer.

The right-hander is just five matches away from breaking former skipper, Daniel Vettori’s record, who featured in as many as 437 internationals.

“I was really happy to play one or two games for New Zealand. I’ve still got to get there first, but my mentor, Martin Crowe, always used to say records are meant to be broken for the next guy to come beat.” Ross Taylor said.

New Zealand will kick off their home summer with the three-match T20Is series against the West Indies from November 27, and Taylor will be hoping to start the 2020/21 season with a bang.
