If the morning session belongs to the Indian bowlers, South African bowlers took away the match in the next session. India bowled out South Africa for 130 runs to set up a target of 208. However, Vernon Philander proved decisive as he rattled the Indian batting-order bagging six wickets.

Indians were bowled out for a mere 135 as South Africa went 1-0 up in the three-match Freedom Series. Philander finished the match with nine wickets.

The second Test will start from January 13 at Centurion.

Brief Score: South Africa 286 and 130 ( de Villiers 35, Markram 34) Shami 3/28

India: 209 and 135 ( Ashwin 35) Philander 6/42

South Africa won by 72 runs.

Here are the statistical highlights from Day 4 on the first Test:

1) Jasprit Bumrah is the fifth bowler in the world to dismiss South AB de Villiers in both the innings this decade.

The other four bowlers are- India’s Amit Mishra at Mohali in 2015, Australia’s Mitchell Johnson at Centurion in 2014, Aussie Peter Siddle at Adelaide in 2012, and England’s Stuart Broad at Leeds in 2012.

2) Wriddhiman Saha becomes the first Indian wicket-keeper to take ten catches in a Test match. He overtakes MS Dhoni’s record of 9 dismissals at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in 2014.

3) This is the first time four Indian seamers have picked at least one wicket in each innings of a Test match.

Also, this is also the first time four Indian pacers have taken at least three wickets in a Test match.

4) This is third lowest total India has failed to chase in the fourth innings. The first two are 120 against West Indies at Bridgetown in 1997, and 176 against Sri Lanka at Galle in 2015.

5) South Africa’s Vernon Philander ended the Cape Town Test with three wickets in fours balls. Last year, Moeen Ali ended the Oval Test against South Africa with a hattrick.

6) South Africa in their last 2 Tests has claimed 40 wickets in 189 overs. That is a wicket after every 28 balls. Thrice have they bowled out the opposition in less than 45 overs.

7) Vernon Philander’s bowling average against India is 16.54, Sri Lanka is 17.20 and Pakistan 17.85. This shows how terrible are the Asian giants in testing pitches.
