KL Rahul’s career is going in a direction which not many were expecting after his promising start to Test career. Just 12 months ago, Rahul had all but sealed his spot in the playing eleven after his impressive show in the home season. However, things have only gone downhill since the second half of last year.

He lost his starting place in the team after a series of forgettable performances. He got a chance to revive his career in the recently-concluded series against South Africa but failed to make it count. After Shikhar Dhawan failed to get going in the first Test, Rahul was recalled to the playing eleven. However, the decision did not pay dividends.

Rahul scored only 30 runs (10, 4; 0, 16) in four innings. But despite the prolonged deep in form, the Indian opener is not losing sleep over it. The 26-year old is looking to learn the lessons from the failure and move on.

“I’ve always looked at the positive side. When you are playing the sport you know you will have more bad days than good days. You need to take things in your stride and try to learn something new and improve every day,” he was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz.

Rahul is not a part of the ODI squad that is currently playing against South Africa. As a result, he tried to remain in touch by playing in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. However, he failed to deliver there too, scoring 3 & 22 in the last two outings.

“I would have liked to spend more time in the middle. I did get a decent hit in the second match. I will play another match on Sunday and then train for a couple of days before I leave,” he said.

Speaking about his current form, he said:  “You learn as you play. Ups and downs are part of your career. This is not exactly a down. I am playing well but not able to convert. I am not able to spend more time in the middle. I will find the answer soon. Maybe it takes just one good innings to get the conversion rate better. It doesn’t have to be a 150 but even a 50 can help me. I’ve been working hard on my fitness and game.”

Challenges in South Africa:

When asked about the challenges he faced in South Africa, Rahul said he was surprised by the seam movement.

“South Africa was a whole new challenge. We expected pace and bounce. I didn’t think there would be so much seam movement. The seam movement with pace and bounce was new. It’s a deadly combination and you don’t want to be an opener when all these things are happening. But it was a good learning experience for me. I know what I need to tweak in my game and where I stand when it comes to my skill.”

Rahul now has a chance to prove his mettle in the upcoming T20I series. He will leave for South Africa on Thursday.

“I was there for a month and I didn’t do too much in the Test series, so I’m looking forward to going there and getting some runs,” he said.
