Former India cricketer Kris Srikkanth had expressed his concern ahead of the fifth ODI. He seemed concerned with MS Dhoni and Hardik Pandy’s ability to finish games with a flourish. Also, he remarked about Rohit Sharma’s failure fourth time in a row.

Srikkanth further pointed India’s middle-order is not yet tested. Virat Kohli and Shikhar Dhawan helped India to post 206 in the last game. Following Dhawan’s departure, India lost wickets at regular intervals. As a result, India could not go past 300.

South Africa banked on Heinrich Klaasen and David Miller to get past the reduced target. Also, India had a bad day at business, as they looked sloppy on the field.

Srikkanth expressed his concern on middle-order:

Srikkanth pointed out Dhoni’s inability to accelerate and Pandya’s missed opportunity to come good.

This series has so far been all about Virat Kohli and one significant partnership with him in the middle (last three with Dhawan). Once you take those numbers out, there is little else to show. Constant chopping and changing of personnel and the batting order are not helping the team’s cause either. Dhoni failed to accelerate as he has in the recent past. The former captain and Hardik Pandya could not have hoped for a more solid platform to launch an attack and get India to a massive score,” Srikkanth wrote in TOI.

Dhoni has scores of 4* off three deliveries, ten off 22 and 42* off 43 while Pandya has made three off six, 14 off 15 and nine off 13. Srikanth hopes India will come out of this phase soon.

Srikkanth hopes Rohit will come good:

For Srikkanth, the form of Rohit Sharma is too big a concern for India. However, he feels this as temporary.

Going into the fifth game, I can only hope this is a temporary setback for the visitors. The form of Rohit Sharma is a big concern, and so is the strike rate and consistency of Dhoni and Pandya. Rohit is too good a player in this format to be missing out, especially in proper batting conditions. The batting unit has to click collectively for the team to be ruthless. I am confident of the bowlers coming back strongly. In an ideal scenario, the series should not be allowed to slip into the final ODI,” Srikkanth concluded.

India takes on South Africa today at Port Elizabeth for the fifth game of the series.
