Shikhar Dhawan scored his 13th ODI century in his 100th ODI against the hosts South Africa but the century went in vain as rain, and the Proteas middle-order took the match away from India’s grip.

The match was affected by rain, and Dhawan feels ‘Lucky’ Miller and rain helped South Africa’s cause. India scored 289/7 in 50 overs, but the score got reduced to 202 in 28 overs which the hosts achieved the total with 15 balls remaining and five wickets in hand.

The Proteas also found a new hero in the form of Heinrich Klaasen who made a gritty 43 off 27 deliveries and took the hosts towards victory.

Klaasen was evenly accompanied by David Miller who rode on luck, as he got dismissed on seven but Yuzvenra Chahal over-stepped and gave the left-handed batsmen another chance.

Miller went on to score 39 off 28 balls and took the match away from India’s reach.

Dhawan feels the Indian spinners struggled due to a wet ball because of rain which helped South Africa’s cause.

“The momentum changed after the dropped catch and then a wicket off no-ball. He (Miller) had luck on his side and grabbed the chances with both hands. Otherwise, we were in very good position. Of course, the rain had an impact too. Our spinners couldn’t turn the ball or grip the ball the way they did in the last three matches. It makes a difference when the ball gets wet. That’s the reason,”

The match was interrupted on a number of times, and Dhawan feels the breaks disrupted them,

“Our flow was disrupted. I got out after that break and runs didn’t come. But the total was good. It (century) could not have been better considering it was my 100th ODI match. I supported Virat Kohli (75). I am happy with the century and going forward just want to continue with my consistency and quality of my game.”
