Riding on Heinrich Klaasen and JP Duminy’s fifties, South Africa defeated India by six wickets to keep the three-match series alive. Chasing 189, the hosts reached the target with 8 balls remaining.

South Africa began the chase on a poor note. With runs not coming at the desired rate, both the openers – JJ Smuts and Reeza Hendricks – were dismissed cheaply. By the end of the powerplay, the Proteas were 50 for 2 with JP Duminy and Heinrich Klaasen batting in the middle. With rain threatening to play spoilsport, every over was turning out to be exciting.

Both Duminy and Klaasen were playing the big shots on a regular basis to keep their team in hunt. Klaasen was looking the dangerous of the two as the wicketkeeper-batsman was hitting sixes at regular intervals. The right-handed batsman went on to score his maiden T20I fifty off just 22 balls to keep his team in hunt.

India finally managed to get rid of Klaasen in the 14th over when the wicketkeeper-batsman edged a Jaydev Unadkat delivery behind the stumps. But by then, he had inflicted enough damage on the visitors. Klaasen scored 69 off just 30 balls with the help of 3 fours and 7 sixes.

Hardik Pandya then dismissed David Miller cheaply but Duminy held from one end to keep the hosts on track. The skipper went on to complete his fifty off 38 balls as the equation came down to 16 from the last 2 overs. Duminy then hit two consecutive sixes in the 19th over to take his team home.

Earlier fifties from Manish Pandey and MS Dhoni helped India post 188 for 4.Β India were in a precarious position after being reduced to 45 for 3 with their top three back in the hut.

However, Pandey and Dhoni scored brilliant half-centuries to not only bail the team out of trouble but also helped it post a huge total. Dhoni joined Pandey on the pitch in the 11th over when Andile Phehlukwayo dismissed Raina to leave India reeling at 90 for 4. The duo then took the matters in their own hands and batted India to a position of strength.

As a result, India managed 55 runs off the last four overs. Dhoni went on a rampage right at the death to register his second fifty in T20Is. The former India skipper scored 17 runs from the final over to reach his fifty off just 27 balls.
