SA vs IND 5th ODI: Twitter Goes Wild As India Thrash South Africa To Seal Historic Series Win

India thrashed South Africa by 73 runs to win the fifth ODI and seal their first-ever bilateral series win in the rainbow nation. Chasing 275, the Proteas were all out for 201 inside 43 overs.

South Africa’s chase looked derailed when they lost three wickets in quick succession to find themselves reeling at 65 for 3. Aiden Markram and Hashim Amla had given the hosts a fine start. The openers added 55 runs for the first wicket before Jasprit Bumrah dismissed Markram. Hardik Pandya then dismissed JP Duminy and AB de Villiers in quick succession to jolt the hosts.

Amla and David Miller then steadied the ship for a while with a fifty-plus stand. However, just when it seemed the duo is set for a big stand, Yuzvendra Chahal dismissed Miller for 36. A little later, South Africa suffered a huge blow when Hashim Amla was run out by Pandya for 71.

Any hopes of seeing a revival soon came to an end when Kuldeep Yadav dismissed Andile Phehlukwayo for a duck to reduce the hosts to 168 for 6. Last match’s hero Heinrich Klaasen and Kagiso Rabada kept the fight on for a while but Kuldeep Yadav all but sealed the hosts’ hopes by dismissing both of them and Tabraiz Shamsi inside an over.  The hosts were eventually bowled out for 201.

Earlier, another middle-order collapse stopped India from capitalising on a solid platform despite Rohit Sharma’s ton. Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma gave the visitors a good start by adding 48 runs. The stand came to an end when Kagiso Rabada dismissed Dhawan for 48. Rohit and skipper Virat Kohli then added 105 runs for the second wicket to lay the foundation for a good total.

However, two run-outs in quick succession put a brake to India’s charge. A 60-run stand between Rohit and Shreyas Iyer stopped the rot for a while. However, Lungi Ngidi rocked India’s middle-order to put an end to the visitors’ hopes of posting a massive total. The right-arm pacer dismissed Rohit (115) and Hardik Pandya on successive deliveries to reduce India from 236 for 3 to 236 for 5. India could not recover from those early setbacks and were eventually restricted for 274 for 7.
