SA vs IND, 2018 : Mahendra Singh Dhoni breaks world record in Jo'burg T20I

Mahendra Singh Dhoni, on Sunday (February 18), added another feather to his already illustrious cap. The former India skipper broke the record for most catches by a wicketkeeper in Twenyy20 cricket during the first T20I against South Africa in Johannesburg.

The 36-year old achieved the feat when he caught Reeza Hendricks off the bowling of Bhuvneshwar Kumar. It was Dhoni’s 134th catch in his 275th T20 match.

The World Cup-winning captain has surpassed Sri Lankan legend Kumar Sangakkara, who had 133 catches in 254 matches. Dhoni and Sangakkara are followed by Dinesh Karthik (123 catches in 227 games) Kamran Akmal (115 catches in 211 T20s) and Denesh Ramdin (108 catches in 168 T20s).

The veteran wicketkeeper Dhoni is already leading the tally of wicketkeepers with most dismissals in T20 Internationals. So far, he has accounted for 77 dismissals in 87 games which includes 48 catches and 29 stumpings.

Overall, Mahendra Singh Dhoni is third on the list of wicketkeepers with most catches in international cricket. The list is led by South Africa’s Mark Boucher with 952 catches in 467 matches.

Australian veteran Adam Gilchrist is second on the list with 813 grabs in 396 games. Dhoni has 601 catches and 174 stumpings in international cricket.

India thrashes Proteas:

Virat Kohli & Co. continued their red-hot form in South Africa with another clinical performance.  The Men in Blue thrashed the hosts by 28 runs to go one nil up in the three-match series. Sent in to bat first, India scored a mammoth 203 for five in the allotted 20 overs.

Shikhar Dhawan led India’s charge with the bat, scoring 72 off just 29.

After that, Bhuvneshwar Kumar ran through the Proteas lineup to restrict them to 175 for 9. The right-arm pacer finished with stunning figures of five for 24 – to claim the Man of the Match award.

The second T20 international will be played at the SuperSport Park in Centurion on Wednesday (February 21).
