After the heavy defeat in the World Cup-opener at the hands of USA, India’s Under-17 team showed that the future of Indian football is in safe hands with an exhilarating display in the just-concluded game against Colombia. The Indian colts lost the game 2-1 but the scoreboard does not justify their spirited performance.

Right from the word go, the Indian players gave it their all, giving the crowd a lot to cheer about. Colombia had started the game on a strong note, dominating the possession but the first real chance of the game came for India when Abhijit Sarkar only had the goalkeeper to beat but he failed. India were then further denied at the stroke of the half time when Rahul’s effort hit the post.

Everyone was impressed with India’s show including cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar as he took to Twitter to praise goalkeeper Dheeraj who denied the visitors twice with spectacular saves.

However, India’s dodgy display came to an end just four minutes after the break when Juan Penaloza unleashed a fierce shot to give his team the lead. But despite conceding the heartbreaking goal, the India kept on working hard and finally reaped the rewards when a bullet header from Jeakson Singh off Stalin’s corner gave them the equaliser and the country its first ever World Cup goal.

The joy and celebrations were, however, short-lived as Penaloza scored in the very next minute to restore his team’s one-goal lead. India tried to find the equaliser again but Colombia remained firm.

The defeat is a tough pill to swallow for the hosts who ran their fancied opponents toe to toe after the demoralizing loss in the first game. The players are receiving praise from all over and Tendulkar once again took to Twitter to praise India’s goal-scorer.

Congratulating Jeakson Singh for the monumental goal, Tendulkar tweeted:

The former cricketer, however, soon deleted his tweet probably because of the mistake he made while typing the goal-scorer’s name.
