While the ongoing Ashes might have spiced up the Test format a bit, there is little denying the fact that Test format is the least popular format in the game at the moment. With the advent of the T20 and its meteoric rise across the globe, the oldest format of the game is really struggling for survival. In the latest attempt to save Tests, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has started the World Test Championship.

Not unlike previous times, every Test will have its value and the teams will have more to play for. And while the cricketing world is busy thinking about measures that could bring back the glory days of Test cricket, former India batsman Sachin Tendulkar has given his two cents on it. The legendary batsman feels that ‘interesting’ pitches are a must to revive Test cricket.

Tendulkar, who holds almost all the major batting records in Tests and ODIs, said that the flat and dead tracks are only going to aid in posing challenges to the five-day format.

“Test cricket is going to revive if we produce interesting tracks, but if the tracks are flat and dead, then Test cricket is going to find its challenges. I know, this Test World Championship has been announced but even to have this World Championship, you got to make cricket interesting. Just by having a Championship, cricket is not going to get interesting,” Tendulkar said.

Citing the results and the kind of cricket that has been on offer in the Ashes so far, Tendulkar said it was a reason why people have moved on from the recently-concluded World Cup to the five-match series so soon.

“(Steve) Smith got injured unfortunately, that was a big blow to him but Test cricket was exciting when Jofra Archer challenged him. The focus shifted to Test cricket, people almost kind of forgot that four weeks ago, there was World Cup being played in England, nobody is talking about that, everyone is talking about Test cricket, because it is challenging and exciting, he added.

Meanwhile, Team India are currently busy playing Tests in the Caribbeans against the West Indies. They will play two Tests before heading home to play three more Tests against South Africa.
