Earlier this year, Indian cricket suffered a big setback when legendary cricketers Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman left the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) due to conflict of interest controversy. The committee was formed three years ago so that it can select the Indian team’s head coach. In 2016, the trio had named Anil Kumble as the head coach before appointing Ravi Shastri as the head coach in 2017.

But earlier this year, the trio decided to end their association with the CAC after being served conflict of interest notices. The Committee of Administrators (CoA) then roped in new members for the CAC. Former India skipper Kapil Dev was entrusted with the task of selecting the head coach this year. The panel also comprised former women’s captain Shantha Rangaswamy and former men’s coach Anshuman Gaekwad.

The committee worked as an ad-hoc body to select the men’s head coach this year. They interviewed a number of candidates before reappointing Shastri as the head coach of the team. But the trio could not continue with their roles either as they were also served with conflict of interest notices and all the three members quit later.

Tendulkar, Laxman to return:

According to latest reports, Sachin Tendulkar and VVS Laxman are set to return to the CAC to be formed on Saturday. According to a top BCCI official, Tendulkar and Laxman who both had resigned in July will resume their roles in the CAC. Current BCCI President Sourav Ganguly, who was the third member of the CAC , had also resigned.

“Sachin and Laxman are likely to get back to CAC,” a top BCCI official told PTI.

“The Committee will be formed at Apex Council meeting tomorrow. CAC will take a call on selection committee also,” the source added.

The BCCI led by Ganguly will hold its 88th Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Sunday at the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai, while the Apex Council meeting will be held on Saturday. If BCCI confirms the appointment of Tendulkar and Laxman, the first job of the panel will be to pick a replacement for MSK Prasad, whose stint as chief of the Indian cricket team has ended.
