Sandeep Lamichhane, the leg spinner from Nepal, has not been included in the national squad for the Cricket World Cup League 2 tri-series in Dubai, which will also feature UAE and PNG.

This is due to his current legal situation, as he is facing charges of sexual coercion and is currently out on bail. Even though there were attempts to obtain court permission for him to travel, Sandeep Lamichhane’s name was not included in the final squad that was announced by the Cricket Association of Nepal on Saturday, reported ESPNCricinfo.

Starting from Monday, Nepal will participate in the tri-series in Dubai against PNG, which is a part of the Cricket World Cup League 2.

In the last tri-series, featuring Scotland and Namibia, which took place in Nepal, Sandeep Lamichhane’s outstanding performance of taking 13 wickets in four matches contributed to Nepal winning all the games in closely fought battles. Lamichhane claimed three wickets in each of the first three matches and followed it up with four wickets in the final game against Scotland.

However, his involvement in the series stirred up controversies, as fans and opponents protested against it. The Scotland team declined to shake hands with Sandeep Lamichhane after the game, and Namibia decided to exchange fist-bumps instead of handshakes following one of their games. The boards of both teams also expressed their concerns and issued statements ahead of the series, condemning gender-based violence.

Sandeep Lamichhane was suspended last year after he was accused of sexual coercion, and an arrest warrant was issued against him. He was apprehended by the police but was subsequently released on bail. Earlier this month, after his suspension was lifted by CAN, he was selected to play for Nepal in the tri-series against Scotland and Namibia.

Nepal is currently positioned sixth in the seven-team Cricket World Cup League 2 league table. Lamichhane has taken 55 wickets in the tournament, which is the highest for Nepal, and he is ranked third on the list of overall wicket-takers.
