Sanju Samson is an outrageous talent. The Kerala wicketkeeper-batsman has time and again shown why he is so highly rated by former cricketers, fans and pundits. But, to the disappointment of many, Samson hasn’t been able to marry his outrageous skills with consistency.

One can also argue that he has not been given enough opportunities to cement his place in the national team. Sanju made his debut for Team India in 2015 but he had to wait for almost five years to get another chance at the highest level.

Sanju Samson forced his way into the reckoning after he smoked the fastest double-century by an Indian in fifty-over cricket during the 2019-20 Vijay Hazare Trophy. With Rishabh Pant struggling with both bat and behind the wickets, Samson was called-up as a back to the underperforming Pant.

But, it was only during the 2020 T20I series against Sri Lanka and then on the subsequent tour of New Zealand where Samson got a chance in the playing 11. But, to utter disappointment of a plethora of his fans, Samson wasn’t able to cash-in on the opportunities, falling cheaply to loose shots.

“I have learnt to understand and focus more on my strengths and (be more) accepting (of) the failures. I try to contribute to the team’s cause and try to take the team over the line. I am learning to focus and control my emotions while batting like MS Dhoni,” Samson said during a podcast arrganged by his IPL franchise Rajasthan Royals.

Samson also delved on his experience of rubbing shoulders with the likes of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in the Indian dressing room.

“It was great to be a part of the Indian team again. To be a part of one of the best teams in the world, surrounded by players like Virat bhai and Rohit bhai, it was a fantastic experience,” Samson said.

Samson was sent to face the super-over during one of the T20Is against New Zealand and the right-hander reckoned that it was that moment that made him feel that he is an important part of the Indian set-up.

“It was a great feeling to be trusted by the players such as Virat bhai and Rohit bhai to go out there and bat in the crucial moments. It’s a great feeling when the team and the players consider you to be a match winner.” Samson added.

The 13th edition of the IPL would have been an ideal opportunity for Samson to stake his claim for the T20 World Cup squad but the chance has now been shrugged off by the global pandemic coronavirus.
