Babar Azam could not have asked for a tougher assignment than a tour of Australia to kickstart his T20I captaincy career. The right-handed batsman was given the responsibility of leading the side after Pakistan Cricket Board sacked Sarfaraz Ahmed as the Test and T20I captain. Sarfaraz Ahmed faced the axe after the humiliating 3-0 loss at the hands of Sri Lanka in the T20I series at home.

Babar, nonetheless, did not have much to celebrate in his maiden assignment as captain. Australia thrashed Pakistan in the three-match series to win it by 2-0 after the first game was washed out. Australia could have won the first game too but unfortunately rain hampered their chances. In the next two games, the hosts made a mockery of Babar and Co. to win both the games comprehensively.

Australia won the second game by seven wickets before winning the third by 10 wickets. As far as personal performance was concerned, Babar did well as he scored two fifties. And Sarfaraz Ahmed has now spoke about his successor for the first time since being sacked. The former Pakistan captain said that Babar is still new to captaincy and urged others to support him.

“Babar is new to the job and my message for all is that we need to support him as much as possible. He is a young captain & he has a young team with him and it’s not easy for a young captain to go to a tough place and fight against a strong team,” said Sarfaraz Ahmed.

The wicketkeeper-batsman, meanwhile, has also lost his place in Pakistan’s team. Consequently, he has not travelled with the team to Australia for the ongoing tour. He has been asked to prove himself in domestic circuit before expecting another recall from the team. Pakistan will next take on Australia in a two-match Test series.
