“Dhoni finishes off in style! A magnificent hit in the stands. India lifts the World Cup after 28 years and its an Indian captain who has been absolutely brilliant on the night of the final,” said Ravi Shastri after skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni hit Nuwan Kulasekara for a six over long-on to end the cricket-mad country’s 28-year-old wait and also Sachin Tendulkar ‘s two decade long ordeal for the rights of being called ‘World Champions’.

2nd April 2011 will always be remembered as a red-lettered day in the history of Indian cricket, for it not only ended the 28-year-old ordeal where the Indian cricket team faltered many times to reclaim the crown but it also was the culmination of Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar’s wait for a global title.

Harbhajan Singh reveals that Sachin Tendulakar celebrated to the hilt with his teammates post the 2011 World Cup win

Sachin Tendulkar, during his 21-year career, had achieved everything that is possible for a batsman on a cricket field. He had scored the most number of Test and ODI runs, scored the most number of centuries; played the most number of matches; scored an ODI double-hundred. But one thing that eluded him despite having scored the most number of World Cup runs and hundreds, was the title. And, so when that dream was finally realized on the night of 2nd April 2011, Tendulkar showed emotions on the field like never before.

And, it seems, he didn’t hold back in the dressing room either. Harbhajan Singh, a key member of India’s World Cup-winning team has revealed in a show on Star Sports that it was the first time that he saw Sachin dancing.

“That day I saw Sachin Tendulkar dancing for the first time, for the first time he didn’t care about people around him and he was enjoying with everyone which I will always remember,” Harbhajan told Star Sports’ ‘Cricket Connected’ show.

Harbhajan revealed that winning the World Cup was an unbelievable feeling and he spent that night sleeping with the winners’ medal.

He added: “Lifting the World Cup was really something special and it was probably the first time I cried in front of everyone. That feeling was overwhelming, I didn’t know how to react.”

“I remember sleeping with my medal on that night when I woke up, I had the medal on me and it felt great. It was something that we dreamed together, it was just coming through and it was an unbelievable feeling. I still get those goosebumps when I think about those moments.” Harbhajan said.

Chasing 275, India was in a state of bother after having lost both of their openers for a score of 31. But a defiant 97 by Gautam Gambhir and an equally brilliant 97* by MS Dhoni ensured that the dream was finally realized in front of the raucous Indian crowd at the Wankhede.
