Scotland will have the opportunity to participate in their fourth T20 World Cup when they play the qualifiers starting on the 17th of October in the UAE. Scotland will battle the likes of Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Ireland, Netherlands, Namibia, Oman, and Papua New Guinea to progress to the super 12 of the tournament. Ahead of the qualifiers, their head coach Shane Burger has named a provisional squad of 40.

Scotland have not played a T20 international since 2019 as the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has caused scheduling problems. Scotland, who featured in their first T20I back in 2007, scored their most significant win in the format against Bangladesh. Richie Barrington’s century was instrumental in securing a 34-run victory for Scotland.

Shane Burger revealed that the 40 names in contention would have the opportunity to play the trial series before the World Cup. Burger, a former South African domestic cricketer, felt delighted to see the depth in Scottish cricket and seeing a good blend of youth and experience.

“It’s exciting to be able to announce 40 names in contention for selection. Every single individual on this list will have the opportunity to play in the trial series and has the chance to go to a World Cup. It’s encouraging to see that the depth of Scottish cricket is really good at the moment and to have such a good blend of experience and youth in this line-up,” Burger stated as quoted by ANI News.
