There are very few player as experienced and as consistent as Shahbaz Nadeem in Indian domestic arena. The Jharkhand spinner is one of the consistent performers in domestic cricket for over a decade now. But at the same time, he is also one of the unluckiest cricketers in the country right now.

Despite all his heroics with the ball, he is yet to make his international debut. Nadeem started his journey in domestic cricket way back in 2004 and has so far played 108 first-class games. He has also played 98 List A and 117 T20 matches. He took 416 wickets in first-class matches, with five 10-wicket hauls.

In September 2018, he came really close to making his international debut after breaking a two-decade-old world record for the best bowling figures in List A cricket. In a Vijay Hazare Trophy match against Rajasthan, he took 8 wickets for 10 runs in 10 overs. The performance helped him earn a place in the T20I squad for the series against West Indies. However, he could not break into the playing eleven of any of the three games. He has not received any call since then.

Nadeem has impressed once again and this time for India A. On the recent tour of West Indies, he picked up an impressive 15 wickets in two unofficial Tests.  Nadeem took five wicket-hauls in both the innings of the first game to help India A win the match. He followed it up with another five-wicket haul in the third game after missing the second one due to a fever.

There is not much that Nadeem can do at the moment apart from performing and he knows it well. The left-arm spinner said that he needs to fight until an opportunity arrives.

“Perhaps, I will have to get more wickets. Mera kaam perform karna hai (My job is to perform) and I am aware of the fact that I am fighting for a left-arm spinner’s position in the senior team. I will have to wait and continue performing well until a position gets created,” Nadeem told indianexpress.com.

“I am of the view that the luck factor is another big thing in a cricketer’s career. Players who play domestic cricket and those who represent the country are equally talented,” he said.
