38-year-old former Pakistan all-rounder Shahid Afridi has been named the marquee player for the Jamaica Tallawahs side in the upcoming Carribean Premier League. The T20 specialist didn’t enter the draft along with Shoaib Malik (Guyana Amazon Warriors), Evin Lewis (St Kitts and Nevis Patriots) and Chris Lynn (Trinbago Knight Riders).

Afridi shared the news on Twitter and got involved in a friendly banter with Imad Wasim. His tweet read, “Happy to have signed with @JAMTallawahs for #CPL18. Just to make sure @simadwasim keeps his top form going in the #Biggestpartyinsport..I thought I’ll be with them for two years @CPL”. Imad was quick to reply saying that he always does.

Guptill, Simmons fetch big

The CPL draft, which took place on March 1, saw Martin Guptill and Lendl Simmons as the biggest gainers. Guptill was roped in by Barbados Tridents while Simmons was picked by St Lucia Stars. Nepal’s Sandeep Lamichhane will play for St Kitts and Nevis Patriots. The teenager didn’t set a base price before entering the fray.

All the Windies cricketers will be available for the entire course of the tournament and players from different countries will set the stage on fire once again. “We are delighted with the response that we have had to the Hero CPL draft this year,” said Pete Russell, the CPL’s chief operating officer. “Every year we have seen an increase in the standard of players who want to be part of the Biggest Party in Sport, and 2018 is no different.”

Tridents put all the issues to rest

Meanwhile, all the cricketers of Barbados Tridents were paid ahead of the London draft. Tridents’ CEO Jason Harper shed some lights on the unfortunate case. “It’s an unfortunate situation that the franchise had to encounter in the last few months as it relates to paying players later than contracted,” said Harper.

“We had a series of regulatory issues in Barbados, reworked a government agreement which left us down on our annual revenues. So a decision was made between both the parties (Tridents and Barbados government) that their support would be reduced which set the franchise further back.” he added.
