Shakib Al Hasan, who had an outstanding time in the ICC World Cup 2019, is doubtful for the upcoming series against Sri Lanka. Meanwhile, Mashrafe Mortaza will continue to lead the team amidst rumours of him retiring from international cricket.

Shakib doubtful for Sri Lanka series

Bangladesh will play a three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka starting from July 26. Colombo will host all the three games while the other two encounters will be on July 28 and 31 respectively. The Tigers some spirited cricket throughout the ICC World Cup 2019 despite failing to progress to the semifinals of the tournament. They won three matches in the competition and were close to winning a few more before failing to seal on the crunch situations.

But the Asian giants will look to make up for the poor run in the World Cup when they go up against Sri Lanka. However, they will miss their star campaigner Shakib Al Hasan who starred with both bat and ball. He became the first all-rounder to score 600 hundred runs and pick ten wickets in one edition of the World Cup. Besides, Bangladesh will miss the service of batsman Liton Das who has asked for a leave due to personal reason.

Former Bangladesh skipper Habibul Bashar said that Mashrafe Mortaza will undergo a fitness test before they announce the squad while Liton Das has asked for a leave. However, the decision regarding Shakib Al Hasan has not been confirmed yet.

“Mashrafe played with an injury in the World Cup. He will take a fitness test before the team leaves for Sri Lanka,” said Bashar. “Liton has asked for a leave and so he won’t be travelling to Sri Lanka. Shakib too has sought leave but the matter is yet to be finalised. We have prepared for all possible scenarios,” he added.

Furthermore, the selectors are waiting for injury updates on players who took part in the World Cup before announcing the squad. Mushfiqur Rahim and Mahmudullah struggled with injuries during the World Cup, but Habibul Bashar feels they have enough time in hand to be fit for the upcoming series.

“There are a few players in the team facing injury concerns. We are awaiting a report on the fitness of Mahmudullah and Mushfiqur Rahim. They’ve got a few days of rest. I hope they’ll be able to play without any problem,” Bashar concluded.
