Just a couple of days before Bangladesh were scheduled to travel to India, they suffered a massive blow. Their Test and T20I skipper as well as their most reliable player Shakib Al Hasan was slapped with a two-year ban by the ICC for breaking anti-corruption code. What made things worse for Bangladesh was Tamim Iqbal’s decision to pull out of the tour to be with his pregnant wife.

Bangladesh had to name a new T20I side with Mahmudullah as the new captain. No surprises then India were the firm favourites to win the first game. The history was also in India’s favour. Prior to the Delhi T20I, both the teams had played 8 T20Is and India had won all of them. However, all those setbacks and history made little difference as Bangladesh came up with a spirited performance to beat India by seven wickets. It was also their first-ever T20I win over the Men in Blue.

India started and finished the game on a poor note which eventually cost them the game. Asked to bat first, India recovered from a shaky start to post a challenging total of 148 for 6 in the allotted 20 overs.

Shikhar Dhawan top-scored with 41 while Rishabh Pant scored 27 from 26. The likes of Shreyas Iyer, Krunal Pandya and Washington Sundar also played handy knocks. For Bangladesh, Shafiul Islam and Aminul Islam picked up two wickets apiece.

In reply, Bangladesh chased down the total with three balls remaining. Senior batsman Mushfiqur Rahim starred with the bat, scoring an unbeaten 60. In the 19th over, Rahim hit four consecutive fours to all but put the game to the bed before skipper Mahmudullah hit a six to take the team over the line.

And soon after the game ended, Shakib Al Hasan took to Facebook to hail the performance of his compatriots.

“What an amazing team performance under tremendous pressure! Congrats boys! You made the entire nation proud,” wrote Shakib Al Hasan.
