A revamped Bangladesh is all set to begin a new year, as they prepare for the tri-series involving Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka from today. After their disastrous performance in South Africa, the side will look to regain their confidence in the upcoming tournament.

After the South Africa failure, coach Chandika Hathurusingha resigned midway through his contract which remained a debatable point ahead of the series opener at the Shere-Bangla National stadium.

Bangladesh will use this series to settle their combination going forward, after making some changes to the squad. Swashbuckling opener Soumya Sarkar and right-arm quick Taskin Ahmed were left out. Veteran Tamim Iqbal will once again reunite with Anamul Haque at the top of the order, as Imrul Kayes was ruled out with an injury. Anamul last played for his country three years back.

Bangladesh team management expects Anamul to bring his domestic circuit form and ease the burden off Tamim’s shoulders, while they’ are likely to use Shakib-Al Hasan at one drop.

Number three was a concern because no one seemed to fit into it. We had decided to bring Shakib at three because we want someone to play regularly. We have seen he is an attacking player and can change gear and we are determined to give him enough time to settle in his new position,” Bangladesh’s coaching director Khaled Mahmud said ahead of the series.

Bangladesh is likely to go in with three fast bowlers with Mashrafe Mortaza, Mushfiqur Rahman, and Rubel Hossain. Abul Hasan can make his way if the team management plans to go with a four-man pace attack.

On the spinning front, the team management is in a dilemma whether to play Mehdi Hasan alongside Shakib or to give left-arm spinner Sanjamul Islam a chance to prove his mettle.
