Former Australia all-rounder, Shane Watson congratulated AB de Villiers for having a prosperous international career, after the latter surprised the cricket world by announcing his international retirement with an immediate effect on Wednesday.

One of the prolific run-scorers of this era, de Villiers admitted he wanted to retire while still at the top. The Proteas legend took to Twitter to share a video message to announce his retirement.

After 114 test matches, 228 one day internationals and 78 T20 internationals it is time for others to take over. I’ve had my turn and to be honest I’m tired,” he said in a video message on Twitter.

The Proteas batsman averaged over 50 in both Tests and one-day international matches. He was one of the leading batsmen of this generation and could score quick runs.

Moreover, he bids adieu to cricket, as South Africa fourth highest run-getter in Test cricket with 8,765 runs.

The 34-year old enjoyed a blistering international career ran well over a decade. Moreover, de Villiers’ stunning exploits on the cricket field made him one of the most loved cricket stars across the world.

It was likely de Villiers would at least play in the next World Cup. But being as unpredictable as his shots, he decided to call it a day.

Further, he also added everybody would miss the legend on the cricketing field.

Congrats @ABdeVilliers17 for an international career that people only ever dream of. One of my favourite players to play against and most certainly one of my most favourite team mates I have ever played with. You will be missed mate. #respect,” the tweet read.
