In a major setback for Team India, their star opener Shikhar Dhawan has been ruled out of the entire World Cup due to a finger injury. Dhawan had sustained the injury during India’s clash against Australia on Sunday at the Oval. The left-handed batsman could not field after sustaining the thumb injury while batting during the match.

He was hit on his left thumb by a delivery from Nathan Coulter-Nile early in his innings and needed medical attention. Dhawan was clearly struggling after receiving the blow but had gone on to score a sublime ton. He was eventually out after scoring 117 off 109 balls.

But with his finger taped, as a precautionary measure, he didn’t take field during the Australian innings. Ravindra Jadeja fielded throughout Australia’s innings during the second innings. He later underwent scans and recent reports are suggesting that he is out of the World Cup.

Missing Dhawan would be a massive blow for India. The opening batsman was looking in red-hot form at the moment. After a stunning season in the Indian Premier League, his display against Australia was enough to show that he was ready to star in another ICC tournament. Dhawan has been India’s star man in ICC tournaments for quite some time now. He was India’s top-scorer in the last two Champions Trophy editions as well as the World Cup.

Meanwhile, with Dhawan out KL Rahul is likely to be promoted as opener. One among Vijay Shankar and Dinesh Karthik could bat at number four. There are also chances of India recalling one among Rishabh Pant and Ambati Rayudu as replacement. Both the players were in the standby list. India, meanwhile, have made a solid start to the tournament.

They have won both their opening games so far against South Africa and Australia. The 36-run win over Australia was enough to prove their title credentials. They will next play against New Zealand on Thursday.
