Following India’s exit from the ICC World Cup 2019, there have been rumours about split captaincy with Virat Kohli leading the team in the Test while Rohit Sharma taking the reins of the limited-overs. The selectors; however, backed the incumbent Kohli to continue the job across the formats. Former Pakistan cricketer Shoaib Akhtar has also extended his support to the current India skipper saying that there is no need for a replacement now.

A split captaincy rule is on the cards for a long time now. With Rohit Sharma doing well in the IPL with the Mumbai Indians and showing his abilities with the Indian team in the absence of Virat Kohli, certain sections backed Rohit to take up the leadership role in the limited-overs. They also justified that it will ease some pressure off Kohli who will be able to concentrate more on his batting. But statistics say that the incumbent skipper enjoys a good record in all the formats of the game.

Thus the current selectors headed by MSK Prasad has backed Virat Kohli to continue as the captain in the series against West Indies. India will play a three-match T20I and ODI series each followed by a two-match Test series as a part of the ICC World Test Championship. With the upcoming World T20Is in sight, the management will not take any risk by tinkering with the side.

Former Pakistan fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar, who is an ardent fan of Virat Kohli has also supported his favourite player to continue as the skipper of team India. Akhtar took part in a question-answer session on the micro-blogging site Twitter where a fan asked him whether he wants to see a split captaincy in the Indian team. The speedster responded quickly saying that there is no need for doing that.
