Rising Indian star Shubman Gill sneaked his name into the record books by becoming the youngest captain to lead a team in the Deodhar Trophy final. He reached the landmark when he strode out to the park to lead India C as they locked horns against India B at the JKCA International Complex Stadium in Ranchi on Monday.

The elegant right-handed batsman surpassed Indian captain Virat Kohli who previously marshalled North Zone in the Deodhar Trophy final. While Kohli was 21 years and 142 days old in the year 2009-10, Shubman Gill, at present is 20 years and 57 days old. However, the feat got overshadowed when Gill was dismissed for just one by Mohammad Siraj, holing out to the cover fielder.

Batting first after winning the toss, India B piled up a daunting score of 283 for the loss of seven wickets. Kedar Jadhav top-scored with 86 before Vijay Shankar and Krishnappa Gowtham launched a late onslaught to guide their side to a healthy total. Ishan Porel was the pick of the bowlers for India C, bagging five wickets for 43 runs in 10 overs.

Meanwhile, Shubman Gill has been in a great touch of late, having garnered 187 runs in two first-class games against South Africa A. He carried his good form by hammering a hundred in the first match of the Deodhar Trophy, resulting in a win for his side. The 20-year old was also part of the Indian squad that belted the South Africans in the three-match Test series by a margin of 3-0.

However, he couldn’t feature in any of the Tests. Gill made his international debut in an ODI against New Zealand at Hamilton earlier this year. He played one more game after that; however, wasn’t able to reach double figures in any of his knocks. Going by his current form, Gill may likely find himself making his Test debut against Bangladesh in the upcoming Test series.
