There is a never-ending debate on who was the better captain of the Indian cricket team between Sourav Ganguly and MS Dhoni. Sourav Ganguly gave the right direction to a talented bunch of individuals with his leadership. He was one of the most successful Indian Test captain. India dramatically clinched the Natwest series in 2002 under him and reached the 2003 World Cup final. But Ganguly has often displayed his anguish for not being able to get his hands on the World Cup ever in his career.
Under MS Dhoni, India rose up to become the No.1 Test side. He also lead the side to the 2011 World Cup triumph and 2007 T20 World Cup victory in his captaincy debut. India also clinched the Champions Trophy in 2013 under his captaincy, making him the only captain to win all the major ICC events.
India haven’t produced a better captain than Sourav Ganguly: Shoaib Akhtar
Shoaib Akhtar had played against the Sourav Ganguly-led Indian side. He has monitored how Ganguly worked with his players and utilized them. Akhtar believes India has not produced a better captain than Ganguly. He also added that MS Dhoni is very good but Ganguly did a fine job of building the team.
“If I talk about India, then it will be Sourav Ganguly. India haven’t produced a better captain than him. Dhoni is very good, he’s a superb captain but when you talk about team building then Ganguly did a great job,” said Akhtar in an interview in Helo app.
Earlier, speaking to CricketAddictor, former India cricketer Atul Wassan picked up MS Dhoni as the better captain ahead of Sourav Ganguly across formats. Wassan said, Ganguly started off really well but than struggled to regain his spot.
He was also of the opinion that a captain should be picked up after the side in built, he should not be picked up only for his captaincy skills, and in that regard Dhoni is way ahead.
