BCCI president Sourav Ganguly has cleared the path for Rohit Sharma to join Team India in Australia provided the opener fully recovers from the hamstring injury. The India opener is out of action since playing against Kings XI Punjab on October 18 because of a left hamstring tear.

Last week, the BCCI had announced the three squads for the upcoming tour of Australia and Rohit Sharma’s name was missing from all of them. At the time of announcing the squads, the BCCI had stated that its medical team would continue to assess Rohit Sharma’s injury.

BCCI statement did make it clear that Rohit Sharma might join the team in Australia once he recovers. But recent reports suggested that Rohit Sharma was unlikely to get the go ahead from the board to join the team later due to the intensity of COVID-19 and bio-bubble requirements.

However, Sourav Ganguly has boosted Rohit Sharma’s chances of playing on the tour by making it clear that the board would send him to Australia if he recovers completely. The former India skipper said that while he does not know how long would the opener take to recover but if he does, he would play.

“Rohit is injured at the moment. Otherwise, why would we leave out a player like him? He is the vice-captain of the national (limited-overs) team,” Sourav Ganguly told PTI.

“We will have to assess him. I don’t know (when he can come back). He hasn’t played so far since the time he has got injured. We want him to recover. It’s the BCCI’s job to get their best players on the park. If he recovers, he plays,” he added.
